Green Museum ProjectsThis is a featured page

This page is dedicated to spreading the word about the innovative green projects happening at museums large and small around the World. It started with just North America, but clearly, one continent at a time is not a solution for the world's environmental problems!

If you are a part of a green museum project, please share your story! Add a thread to this page and be sure to include the institution name and website and a description of your project. By sharing your disappointments and successes, we can learn from one another and grow the green museum movement.

A little less building going on; a lot more changing habits. Two GW Museum Studies students are working at the MAryland Historical Society on research to cut their energy and materials consumptions for efficiencies for the environment and the organization.

MassMoCA in North Adams, MA, is hoping to build a Recovery-Act supported Solar Array and become a teaching center. Their site, with all that mill rooftop, and so close to a power distributor, sounds pretty ideal.

The Phipps Conservatory, Pittsburgh, PA - Next Step - A LIVING BUILDING!

Here are links to two articles about the recent building project which won the Eco Structures Evergreen 2008 Award, and the next building which will be a Living Building. You must keep an eye on this project and how they go about developing the project.

Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State College http://yournewburchfieldpenney.com/

When it opens in November, the Burchfield Penney Art Center is expected to be the first art museum in New York state to be certified by the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. Slated for silver certification, the museum is designed to meet rigorous standards in the areas of site sustainability, water use and efficiency, reduced use of energy and atmospheric impact, use of materials and resources, improved indoor air quality and innovation and design process. In addition to LEED recognition, the museum will be a participant in the New York Energy Smart New Construction Program, meeting state standards to reduce energy usage and consumption.

To get this page going, I'll start with a list of museums with green facilities. This is a very short list, and not exhaustive. If your institution is not on here, please reply and add your name to the list! Or start a new thread to discuss a museum's green facility in detail.

Here's an innovative green museum program coming out of Chicago:

The Notebaert Nature Museum produces a weekly half-hour podcast called "The Little Green People Show: Sound advice on green living in the big city." In each episode, self-described "Eco Chicks" Laurene von Klan and Jill Riddell answer listener questions, offer expert advice, and deliver commentary on all the opportunities and challenges faced by the average urban dweller trying to go green. Topics range from the usual environmental issues like recycling and composting to some unusual themes like Gruzzwords and fashion.

Along with the podcasts, the Little Green People Show's website offers a blog where writers begin conservations with readers about sustainable living. One regular writer, Green Mama (a.k.a. Manda Aufochs Gillespie), offers tips on green parenting.

This green museum program is great because the Notebaert Nature Museum is reaching out beyond its walls via the Web to people who may never be museum visitors. Plus, it is using hip and trendy, yet familiar, technology, podcasts and blogs, to reach people.

"The Chicago Academy of Sciences and its Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum inspire people to learn about and care for nature and the environment. The Academy improves quality of life in Chicago and the region by delivering superior environmental and science education programs to students and teachers, by offering Museum exhibitions and conducting public programs that foster green living, and by restoring local ecosystems and advancing scientific knowledge through collections and research."
