The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum's Little Green People Show

Here's an innovative green museum program coming out of Chicago:

The Notebaert Nature Museum produces a weekly half-hour podcast called "The Little Green People Show: Sound advice on green living in the big city." In each episode, self-described "Eco Chicks" Laurene von Klan and Jill Riddell answer listener questions, offer expert advice, and deliver commentary on all the opportunities and challenges faced by the average urban dweller trying to go green. Topics range from the usual environmental issues like recycling and composting to some unusual themes like Gruzzwords and fashion.

Along with the podcasts, the Little Green People Show's website offers a blog where writers begin conservations with readers about sustainable living. One regular writer, Green Mama (a.k.a. Manda Aufochs Gillespie), offers tips on green parenting.

This green museum program is great because the Notebaert Nature Museum is reaching out beyond its walls via the Web to people who may never be museum visitors. Plus, it is using hip and trendy, yet familiar, technology, podcasts and blogs, to reach people.

Hi Rachel, I'm the producer of the Little Green People Show and for all of us here a the Notebaert Nature Museum, I say, thanks for noticing!

A couple small changes over here at Little Green People Show HQ to keep you up-to-date.

1) We've gotten shorter! More like 15 minutes or even 10 per show.
2) We're adding new blog/podcast content more than once a week.
3) We've gearing up to start taking the show on the road, now and then, and recording in the field.

But you got the most important part exactly right. We're looking to reach beyond the walls and connect with folks who may or may not ever walk through our doors. Still, you and everyone else here, are now officially invited. We've got a little studio and we love live studio guests.

My best,

Shane DuBow

Welcome Shane. I think your idea is fabulous - it's what I call mainstreaming museums....putting museums in mainstream life so that the public slowly begins to naturally expect museums to play many roles in their lives. And doing it through green is perfect synergy. Thanks and good luck - sorry I'm not in Chicago to visit. When you set up a satellite office in Maryland, let me know! SB Do you find this valuable?
