What's the best lighting for artwork in a museum?
Nov 14 2008, 11:32 PM EST
I know that CFL's emit UV, but I hear there are UV filters available. However, CFL's generate a lot of heat. LED's are expensive up-front, but they are much more efficient than CFL's, they don't generate much heat, last a long time, don't contain mercury, but they aren't as bright. What about fiber optics? How do they compare in cost and energy savings?

We are still using tungsten lamps, but have switched from 90 watt floods to 60's in some cases to lower our bill. We are currently looking into different bulbs from various manufacturers that produce more light on lower wattage, including LED's. We had some sample bulbs that I believe would work in our current fixtures and they look promising, but are quite expensive. UV filters offered by the fixture companies are often outrageously expensive, so you might want to look into some method of making your own if feasable, say from UV glass or plexi (if heat isn't an issue). Fiber optics are nice for cases and objects that are nearby, but I haven't seen any yet that would work for general gallery lighting. I'm not an expert in the field, so maybe someone else can chime in on that topic.

I've been researching LED's for the past few weeks, but haven't tested any yet. It seems like some would work, such as the Cree Xlamp XRE Par 30 seen here:( http://www.ledwaves.com/product.php?productid=19689&cat=414&page=1 ) Please let me know if you try LED's in your facility and how they work out. I'll do the same. Do you find this valuable? |

These look like the ones we had and the light quality looked nice. We didn't get a chance to try them in the gallery, but I think they are still around. Hopefully we can put some in to see what they look like on the artwork. I'll let you know what I think.
